Commitment to hydrogen combustion technology

Fokker Next Gen stands out as the sole aircraft OEM fully committed to bringing a hydrogen combustion-powered 120-seat short to medium-range jet airliner to market by 2035. This ambitious project is not just about leading the charge towards sustainable aviation, it’s about pioneering a future where air travel is both efficient and environmentally friendly.

Our aircraft is designed to be versatile, also capable of flying on Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) to and from airports lacking hydrogen fueling infrastructure. This dual-fuel capability ensures that we can offer sustainable solutions regardless of the current state of airport infrastructure, making our approach both innovative and pragmatic.

Navigating a shifting landscape

This year's Farnborough Airshow highlighted the industry's immediate focus on more efficient Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)-powered and SAF-hybrid electric aircraft, led by prominent OEMs and supported by major suppliers. While these advancements are crucial steps toward achieving net-zero carbon emissions, they seem to signal a shift away from hydrogen developments. At Fokker Next Gen, however, we are dedicated to moving beyond these interim solutions to create a truly sustainable future.

Our hydrogen combustion aircraft represents the next significant leap in sustainable aviation. Temporary fluctuations in funding for hydrogen initiatives are a natural part of the aerospace sector's lengthy development cycles. I view these fluctuations not as setbacks, but as opportunities to refine and perfect our technology. By the time we bring our hydrogen-powered airliner to market in 2035, it will exemplify the highest standards of quality, reliability and efficiency.

Collaboration and Innovation

Fokker Next Gen's journey towards a hydrogen-powered future is a collaborative endeavor. Our project is built on strong partnerships with our supply chain, fostering innovation and ensuring that every component and system of our aircraft meets the highest standards. At Farnborough, we engaged in productive discussions with several of our (prospective) partners, solidifying plans and exploring new collaborative opportunities.

The airshow served as a platform to showcase not only our vision but also the collective progress of our partners and the aviation industry at large. From cutting-edge avionics to advanced materials, the innovations presented at Farnborough reinforced our belief in the power of collaboration. Together, we are creating an aircraft that will set new standards in sustainability and performance.

Clear affirmation of strategic direction

The Farnborough International Airshow 2024 provided a clear affirmation of Fokker Next Gen's strategic direction and potential. The current emphasis on SAF and hybrid electric technologies underscores the industry's commitment to reducing emissions, but the long-term future of aviation lies in zero (carbon) emission solutions. Our focus on hydrogen combustion technology positions us at the forefront of this transformative shift.

Aligning with Fokker Next Gen means embracing the future of aviation. Our commitment to bringing a hydrogen-powered airliner to market by 2035 is backed by rigorous research, a robust development plan, and strong industry partnerships. We are confident that our innovative approach will not only meet the growing demand for sustainable aviation but also deliver significant returns for our stakeholders.

Looking Ahead

As I reflect on the Farnborough Airshow 2024, it’s clear that the path to a sustainable aviation future is both challenging and rewarding. The insights and connections gained at Farnborough will be instrumental in shaping our strategic direction in the coming years. While the industry navigates temporary shifts in funding and priorities, our unwavering focus on hydrogen and dual fuel combustion propulsion for this type of aircraft remains steadfast.

I was inspired by the progress showcased at Farnborough and remain dedicated to our mission of transforming the aviation landscape. By embracing innovation, fostering collaboration, and staying true to our sustainable vision, I am confident that the future of aviation is bright.

A call to action for the industry

The Farnborough International Airshow 2024 has reinforced my belief that the future of short and medium-range aviation lies in hydrogen and achieving true zero-carbon emissions—not just a X % reduction or net-zero emissions. This bold vision requires a collective effort to push the boundaries of current technology and infrastructure. I invite our industry peers, partners, and stakeholders to join us on this exciting journey. Together, we can bring truly sustainable commercial aircraft to market, setting new standards for efficiency and environmental stewardship.

Warm regards,

Juriaan Kellermann
